OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION

Building Inspector I, II, or III conducts inspections on work performed within the scope of their certification held for new and existing one- and two-family dwellings, townhouses, manufactured dwellings, and modular structures. A-Level certification conducts inspections and plan reviews on commercial work within the scope of their certification to ensure compliance with the Oregon Structural Specialty Code. Performs inspections of building and structures of all complexities and issuing approval or disapproval and writing correction notices; enforcing appropriate State specialty codes, ORS, OAR, County ordinances, and other related regulations; providing information regarding permits, specialty codes, and compliance procedures to architects, engineers, builders, and the public.

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

  • Conducts plans reviews and field inspections of buildings and structures to as they apply to the applicable Codes, to verify compliance with State Building Codes.
  • Recommends or takes appropriate corrective action to obtain compliance of construction projects with applicable codes.
  • Assists other departments and the public regarding applicable building regulations.
  • Investigates building code violations, interprets building code requirements and takes appropriate action.
  • Answers code related questions and assist the public at the Building Division front counter, by telephone and by e-mail.

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATES/LICENSES

Building Inspector I or II:

  • Current Driver's License
  • Oregon Inspector Certification (OIC)
  • Two (2) Oregon State Certifications at the "A" Level Inspector, or equivalent of two (2) "A" Level (to be determined by the Klamath County Building Official)

Building Inspector III:

  • Current Driver's License
  • Oregon Inspector Certification (OIC)
  • Three (3) Oregon State Certifications at the "A" Level Inspector, or equivalent of three (3) "A" Level (to be determined by the Klamath County Building Official)

EDUCATIONAL/VOCATIONAL PREPARATION

Building Inspector I, II, or III (Multi-certified):

Minimum high school diploma or equivalent "GED". At least 3-5 years of experience working in jobs having similar duties or knowledge of principles and practices of structural building codes and government legal procedures and terminology in the area of structural building codes and regulations, materials, techniques, and safety standards.

Must have knowledge and skill in the following:

  • Basic development principles and processes.
  • Reading, interpreting, and evaluating blueprints, plans, and specifications.
  • Planning principles and land use regulations.
  • Customer service principles.
  • Reviewing plans for compliance with applicable standards and guidelines.
  • Understanding and applying code standards.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public.

Must have demonstrated ability to:

  • Interpret and evaluate plans, specification, and engineering drawings.
  • Work in sometimes adverse weather conditions for extended periods of time.
  • Walk in rough terrain, stoop, bend, and crawl.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others at all times.
  • Work independently as well as in a team setting.

Physical Requirements:

A balance of time is spent in the field in all types of weather requiring the ability to drive a variety of vehicles, walk on uneven surfaces, climb into trenches and on ladders, crawl into confined spaces, etc., exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 15 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

EXCELLENT BENEFITS & COMPENSATION

This is a full-time position with the Community Development Department. The starting hourly wage for this position is:
Building Inspector I: $24.46 per hour, with future increases extending up to a current maximum of $30.94 per hour.

Building Inspector II: $26.97 per hour, with future increases extending up to a current maximum of $34.11 per hour.

Building Inspector III: $29.73 per hour, with future increases extending up to a current maximum of $37.64 per hour.

Starting compensation is determined by Klamath County based upon skill. The normal work schedule is 8 hours per day, 5 days per week. This position is classified as Non-Exempt by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FSLA) and, therefore, is eligible for overtime pay. This position is represented by the International Laborer's Union, Local 737.
