Job Title: Library Assistant III - Adult Services

Type: Full-Time

Salary: $17.75 - $19.20 per hour, depending on experience


General Summary
Performs full scope of clerical and para-professional responsibilities in the operation of the Adult Services Department of the Library, which provides services to patrons.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following is not all inclusive and other duties may be assigned.
  • Serves as lead worker for Reference Department.
  • Keeps abreast of library policies and procedures, computer documentation, professional literature; makes suggestions and passes on public input to supervisors.
  • Suggests procedural and program changes for the Reference Department of the Library through participation in workshops and direct consultation with the Library Department Supervisor.
  • Implements new and continuing programs for the Main Library; 06 Assists Library Assistant Director in presenting and preparing programs for youth and adults; assists with promotion and outreach programs.
  • Assists Library Assistant Director in selecting new and replacement materials and assigning status of materials in acquisitions/cataloging systems; assists with re-shelving duties on an on-going basis.
  • Directly assists patrons (in person or by phone) in locating materials and information; provides assistance to impaired patrons by locating material suitable to their needs.
  • Assists in selecting electronic resources and digital media
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Library management team.

Education and/or Experience, Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Requires a knowledge of current procedures, practices and philosophy of library operation; experience in many aspects of library circulation. Verbal proficiency in Spanish preferred.
  • Current Driver’s License
Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents.  Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.  Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of database software; internet software; spreadsheet software and word processing software.

Work Schedule
This is a full-time position. The normal work schedule is 40 hours per week; exact schedules are assigned by management. It is the attendance standard of the employer that all employees be present and on times each shift they are scheduled to work. Full or partial absence during any scheduled shift, arriving late, or leaving early, for whatever reason, may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.  Time off may be approved if allowed by applicable policies covering illness, injury, or other personal emergency.
