STARTING WAGE: $26.49/hour
General Position Summary
Performs skilled mechanical work of a journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of all types of gasoline and diesel vehicles and equipment. Performs skilled welding and fabrication work as needed in the County Public Works Department.
Essential Functions
The following may not be all inclusive and other duties may be assigned.
Makes minor repairs or replacements to water pumps, starters, cylinder heads, thermostats and alternators and other mechanical components of a vehicle.
Makes major engine repairs to all subassemblies in both diesel and gasoline equipment.
Troubleshoots and repairs all malfunctions in electrical systems, which may include complete wiring.
Trouble shoots and makes repairs to transmissions, which includes complete reconditioning.
Makes adjustments to differentials and replaces as necessary.
Replaces or reconditions hydraulic or air type brakes.
Removes, installs, reconditions and reseals hydraulic systems.
Welding and fabrication as needed by the department.
Cuts limbs, brush and trees with chain saw as needed in emergencies.

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education, Certification, & Experience
Education and training in diesel engine repair from an accredited school or experience as a journeyman mechanic in gasoline and diesel engine repair; knowledge of the methods, practices, and tools used in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and light and heavy equipment. Must provide own personal hand tools.
Valid Oregon Class A Commercial Driver's License (Endorsements for Tank Doubles/Triples and Air Brakes)
First Aid Certification

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Work Schedule
The normal work schedule is 8.00 hours per day 5 days per week; exact schedules are assigned by management. It is the attendance standard of the employer that all employees be present and on time each shift they are scheduled to work. Full or partial absence during any scheduled shift, arriving late, or leaving early, for whatever reason, may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment. Time off may be approved if allowed by applicable policies covering illness, injury, or other personal emergency.
