General Position Summary

Serves as Patrol Division Shift Supervisor and assists Patrol Deputies in enforcement of laws and prevention of crime, issues specific instructions and assignments for the assigned shift. The Patrol Sergeant is responsible for direct front-line supervision of those supervised and represents the Sheriff’s Office as the first supervisor accessible to the public.

• Education, Certification, & Experience
  • Five years' law enforcement experience which should include experience in supervision.
  • Possess Supervisory Certificate from DPSST within one year of appointment.
  • Possess Intermediate Certificate from DPSST within one year of appointment.
  • Oregon Driver's License
  • First Aid Certificate
  • CPR Certification
• Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Language Skills - Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents.  Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.  Ability to prepare presentations using original or innovative techniques or style.  Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management and/or public groups.
  • Mathematical Skills - Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Reasoning Ability - Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Computer Skills – To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of LEDS/ForceCom Internet software and Word, Excel and Beacon Word Processing software.

Salary and Benefits

This is an hourly, non-exempt position, with a wage range of $6,968.00 - $8,817.12 per month.  The pay range listed here reflects the FULL pay range for this position for the current fiscal year.  Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises 3-7 employees in the Patrol Division. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; coaching and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; explosives; risk of radiation and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Work Schedule 

The normal work schedule is 8 or 10 hours per day 5 or 4 days per week depending on shift assignments; exact schedules are assigned by the Sheriff. It is the attendance standard of the employer that all employees be present and on time each shift they are scheduled to work. Full or partial absence during any scheduled shift, arriving late, or leaving early, for whatever reason, may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment. Time off may be approved if allowed by applicable policies covering illness, injury, or other personal emergency.
