General Position Summary
The Lieutenant of one of the major operational divisions of the Sheriff's Office, such as Patrol, Corrections or by assuming other responsibilities deemed by the Undersheriff or Sheriff to be of sufficient significance to rise to the level of Lieutenant.  Incumbents are responsible for assisting in administering and managing; coordinating, evaluating all services provided by the division or assigned area.

The Lieutenant provides management of operational direction for the assigned division within the Sheriff’s Office.  It differs from the Sergeant which is responsible for the activities and staff on day-to-day operations and programs within a division of the Sheriff's Office. It also differs from the Undersheriff who determines policies and objectives for the operations of the division.

Essential Functions
The following may not be all inclusive and other duties may be assigned.

Assists in the planning and supervision of the overall operations of the Corrections Division of the Sheriff's Office; assigns duties through the sergeants; oversees general work activity.

At the direction of Undersheriff, leads and directs the activities of jail personnel in carrying out the operation of the jail facility; ensures that established guidelines are followed by the particular operational unit, and that work meets standards.

Assist the Undersheriff in developing and preparing policies and procedures of the facility operation.

Recommends personnel and training to the Undersheriff concerning assigned divisions. Approves training requests and coordinates training programs at the direction of the Undersheriff and ensures training and certification levels are maintained for all assigned personnel.

Participates in and monitors the Corrections facility budget; projects budgetary needs and recommends revenue methods. Assists the Finance Manager with accounts payable, accounts receivable, Adult in Custody General Welfare Program, and oversight of bail deposits. Assists in preparation of grant requests, RFP’s, contracts, and Memorandums of Understanding with other Sheriff’s Office partners.

Assists in the oversight of the Medical Department, Pre-Trial Release staff, and Transport/Court Security reporting requirements, and operations.

Conducts investigations into department policy violations and/or criminal misconduct.


​​​​​​Participates in the oversight in managing Adult in Custody population control within the facility; confers regularly with courts, law enforcement agencies regarding facility population and space available.

Schedules and oversees facility tours and inspections as requested by the Undersheriff or Sheriff.

Assists the Undersheriff in monitoring the mechanical and physical adequacy of the Jail and facilitates repairs and modifications as needed.

Responds to Adult in Custody grievance appeals; reviews Adult in Custody disciplinary hearing results.

Performs job description duties of a Corrections Deputy and Corrections Sergeant as necessary.


Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises 3-7 employees in the Jail. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education, Certification, & Experience
Eight years of experience in corrections including two years supervisory experience. Knowledge of laws, rules and regulations pertaining to the Sheriff's Office and modern policing methods. Demonstrable experience in managing grants, schedules, RFP’s and contracts.
Possess Supervisory Certificate from D.P.S.S.T within one year from appointment.
Possess Advanced Certificate from D.P.S.S.T. within one year of appointment.
