Position: Shop Foreman

Department: Public Works Road Department

Salary: $6,848.42 - $8,918.91 per month 


General Position Summary
Supervises and directs work for the mechanics. Oversees maintenance and upkeep of the facilities located at 6100 Wesgo, including the geothermal well and pump.

Essential Functions
The following may not be all inclusive and other duties may be assigned.
  • Meets daily with mechanics to assign daily work duties ensuring conformance to quality, safety, and productivity standards;
  • Oversees diagnostic evaluations, major repairs, and overhauls on heavy road and construction equipment requiring considerable knowledge of diesel engines and their fuel systems.
  • Supervises repairs and overhauls on engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, brake systems, heating and cooling systems, and suspensions on various heavy equipment;
  • Supervises the service of automobiles, trucks and construction equipment with fuel, oil, grease, water and air, to include the Fleet program.
  • Oversees preventative maintenance inspections on fleet vehicles and performs repairs and/or replaces parts as necessary.
  • Supervises the maintenance and accuracy of the shop inventory;
  • Meets with Road Superintendent to provide updates on equipment and/or facility repairs;  
  • Oversees the maintenance, cleaning and upkeep of the facilities at 6100 Wesgo;
  • Communicates instructions and job goals; provides training, answers questions, and assists with problems;
  • Orders routine materials with prior general approval; maintains records and reports including daily material and equipment utilization reports and foremen reports, etc.;
  • Recommends, to the Road Superintendent, changes in work methods or techniques to produce greater efficiency; Responds to inquiries from the public; refers citizens to another supervisor when appropriate;
  • Writes equipment specifications for competitive bid purchases. Receives new equipment purchases and ensures adherence to the specifications; fills out forms and procures necessary licensing;
  • Performs other related duties necessary to ensure the efficient operation of the maintenance shop;
  • Able to assist and or fill in for the Parts Procurement Specialist;
  • Plans and oversees early morning and weekend snow removal crews on designated rotation;
  • Handles emergency after-hours calls in accordance with designated list by the Road Superintendent;
  • Must have reasonable computer skills, to include use of Excel, other Microsoft Suite applications, downloading manuals, IRIS etc.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises 5 employees in the Road Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education, Certification, & Experience
Possession of a high school diploma or GED certificate; Associate degree in Diesel Technology from an accredited college or trade school is preferred.  Five years of journey level experience as a mechanic working with diesel and heavy equipment, which includes at least one year of supervisory or foreman experience; or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Work Schedule
The normal work schedule is 8.00 hours per day 5 days per week; exact schedules are assigned by management.  It is the attendance standard of the employer that all employees be present and on time each shift they are scheduled to work.  Full or partial absence during any scheduled shift, arriving late, or leaving early, for whatever reason, may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.  Time off may be approved if allowed by applicable policies covering illness, injury, or other personal emergency.
